6 Month Report 1st of July – 31st of December 2017

Another action packed first 6 months in this lifestyle sport, thinking of all the things I’ve learnt, seen and worked for and looking forward to implementing them into my races in the back end of the season.

The start of the SCTA/Protector Aluminium Junior Scholarship started in the winter months which is typically our base training phase, its cold, its long and its usually dark not really the ones you jump out of bed all excited for, but you’ve got to get it done. The winter block was a solid build for me compared to previous years I went into them with a few issues and lost confidence but came out ready to go; I had passion, determination and a “Can Do attitude.”

The first major race wasn’t until December so until then there was what Toby likes to call “Training Races,” those races that you get no taper for…... “Damn.” These are the races that build you and prepare you for what lies ahead. The races get you stronger both physically and mentally, they also teach you how to race under fatigue which helps drastically later in the season.

My first race of the season was the classic Rainbow Beach Double Triathlon which consisted of two sprint races over two days, this race is one of my favourite races, it’s really the SCTA squads gathering race. We all race against each other, have fun and dust the cobwebs off our skills and race.

My Next Race was a team event at the Sunshine Coast 70.3 where I rode 90km, which was by far my longest TT effort, I loved it! The feeling of my legs feeling like jelly after the ride made me feel like I really went hard and left nothing left in the tank. Although riding home after presentation and making some silly mistakes lead me to having a bit of an accident on the bike……. That was fun telling Dad about it. Not only did it put me out from training for a week it also caused a few complications for my next race, which was Robina.

Robina was a long course event which I had a good swim, had cramps on the bike and when I dismounted had to pull out due to both of my legs locking up and causing serious pain. Absolutely devastated the whole drive back to the Sunshine Coast, when I got home having to have a tough conversation with my coach and my parents helped get my mind over it and focusing on fixing the problem.

Thankfully I have a great support team with my family, friends, Kate Shultz at Intune Sports and Health, and Dr Kate Gazzard from The Pro Clinic, got me back better then before and feeling confident leading into my Kawana Aquathlon and Race # 3 of the Queensland Triathlon Series.

This weekend was a massive confidence booster having a great race on Saturday followed by a race on Sunday to build both the body and the mind in preparation for runaway bay. This race was fast and exciting. I got through the weekend with any cramps or issues which also made me more confident leading into my first major race of the season.

Runaway Bay Super Sprint Race Weekend doubled as race #1 of the Australian Junior Triathlon Series. This weekend was a massive 7 races over the course of 4 days. This race is all about recovery and having the ability to back up and race again within a few hours. It has some of the best Junior athletes racing and is a great test to see where you are at and get an idea of what needs working on for the next race. Finishing off the year with some brick sessions, enjoying the holiday festivities and looking forward to the new year and racing at Robina race #5 on the 14th of January.

What’s in store for the next 6 months?
The next few months are going to be packed with major races starting on the 3-4 of February I’ll be traveling with my bike down to Adelaide to race #2 of the Australian Junior Triathlon Series, followed by Race #6 of the QTS, Luke Harrop Memorial Triathlon on the 25th of February, Perth on the 3-4 of march (Race #3 of the AJTS) and then New Zealand on the 22-26th of March (Race #4 of the AJTS-Selection race for the youth Olympics).

Working closely with the SCTA/Protector Aluminium Junior Scholarship Sponsors to really have a crack at the back end of the season. Making sure I fuel correctly with my meal plan thanks to Tara Partridge| Tara Leanne Nutrition and Unique Health products| Clif Bar for the awesome Clif Bars, gels and Bloks. Recover correctly with guidance from Kate Gazzard| The Pro clinic and Kate Shultz| Intune Sports and Health. Maintaining my swimming with the help of The Kawana Aquatic Centre, Xterra wetsuits| Xterra Australia- Wetsuits and Boards| Titan Performance Group and Vorgee. Continuing my running with Mizuno Running| Mizuno running Australia and looking good while doing it thanks to Cannibal Australia.

Also, I’m looking forward to getting to know Stewart McCully from Next Level Elite and getting an understanding on how to see things differently and work on myself mentally.

Thanks
A massive thanks to these people
Toby Coote- For your patience and guidance
Kate Gazzard- For helping me get back onto my feet after the injury
Kate Shultz- For preventing those nasty injuries from happening again
Lucy Bowden- For helping me get better at the social media side of things

Also to all my family, friend’s supporters and followers without all of you it would be a lot harder to do the things that I do. You are the ones help me out when I’m feeling low and pick me up and help me getter better and stronger. Thank you all.

Queensland Triathlon Series Race #5
Race Details

Distance:  Olympic Distance – Open Males
1.5km/40km/10km
Transition:
Sunday – 5:15am-6:30am
Race Start:
Sunday – 6:00am
Race Number: 2…Yep #2
Race Result – 3rd Place Open Male

Race Plan & Goal: The goal for the first race of the year is to keep my skills up to date and to continue working on practising my transition skills preparing for Adelaide in a few weeks.

Preparation for the race: Hydration started two days out, it was going to be a very important factor for this race because I would be racing at a very hot/humid time in the classic Robina heat. Gotta love it.

Transition set up: Great to be back in the “Open Men’s” rack position, lots of room and easy to see, it was going to be a warm one so I put two ¾ full frozen bottles on my bike just to stay hydrated and battle the heat. 15mins before my swim start I had a Clif Gel

Swim: The Swim was interesting; the water was a lovely warm bath. The gun went off just when I got to the line and we were off, a mad dash to the first can. After the first lap there was 2 people just in front of me and 2 people swimming at my feet. I tried to kick as much as possible to get away, but I lost a lot of energy and towards the end of the swim the people ahead of me seemed to get away a bit. Coming out of the water in 5th …..This was not pleasing to me with how the swim went although now I know what needs more work leading into the major races coming up.

Transition 1: Running into transition after a little scuffle, I was at my rack getting my helmet on grabbing my bike and wasting no time…I left transition very quickly….

Bike: I ran out of transition and mounted my bike and landed on the back of the seat, it had flicked back upright, I jumped off the bike and started smacking the seat to try and get it back into place before jumping back on and started the ride…..disappointing to lose about 20 seconds and the momentum but I was happy with adaption for such an event and happy with my ride it was a sweltering day and I just wanted to keep up a good pace for when I get onto the run to finish strong. I had my gel on the 4th lap of the bike and it was tough to get down in the heat, washed it down with a lot of water.

Transition 2: Following the course to the dismount line, once I jumped off the bike and my feet hit the road I lifted my bike and was running and ran into transition very aggressively as I still knew I had a lot of work to do to try and get my first podium in “Open Males” wave. Running into transition I put my shoes on, helmet off, grabbed my race belt and hat and ran.
Run: Running out of transition like floating in the Mizuno Sonic’s, I knew that the 10km was going to be hard and hot, I paced myself for the first lap and started to pick up the pace as the time went on. Setting up targets as I went alone, feeling good physically and mentally. Picking up contender by contender….so pleased that I never got passed on the run at all.

Summary: Great to finish todays race, With the hot Robina heat and the Olympic distance race was great! Building on more confidence leading into AJTS race #2 at Adelaide.
Finished the race in 3rd Place Open Males.

Thanks again for everyone’s support…..it really mean so much to me.

Queensland Aquathlon Champs – 16-19 Years State Champion / Overall Race Winner
QTS # 3 – 4th Open Male

Race Plan & Goal:
Saturday and Sunday-  My goal for this race was to have a good hit out, it’s the first race back since my camping so it’ll be good to see how my form is after a solid winter block.

Race Report – Queensland Aquathlon Champs

Preparation for the race –  Hydration was going to play a very important part on this weekend’s race, the weather was predicted to be raining, and clear with mild temperatures for Sunday. I had been drinking enough fluids and the correct in-take before of electrolytes throughout the week.

Transition set up –Transition was basically a free for all

Briefing for race – I knew the course and I was ready to go, I was really looking forward to what laid ahead, this was going to be another great learning experience for me that will benefit me. Seeing what needs improving on leading into Runaway Bay.

Run- I knew that the first run was going to be fast, I made my way to the front of the line to ensure that I would have no problems getting to a prime position before the first left turn. Once we all went off I didn’t get into a rhythm until we hit the first straight where I positioned myself behind the lead runner. There was a group of about 5 of us. A few serges where put down by the others to try and break it up a bit but I made sure that I didn’t lose contact with the leaders I put my googles and cap on just after the turnaround, so I had nothing to worry about before heading into transition. When we hit the turnaround, I was waiting for a good chance to surge and get ahead of everyone before going into transition.

Transition 1- I was the first person into transition and the third person to my rack, all I had to do was take off my shoes but I seemed so slow compared to the other two people, I had lost my urgency to get in and get out.

Swim- After being the third person in the water I kicked and got to the can in first, turning the can and trying to get a gap from the other two. My arms felt heavy, it took a while for them to loosen up and feel better. After turning the last can to go into the beach I had gotten a small gap which was good, now I had some time to get out and dive back in and get away. The second lap felt a lot quicker and I felt as if I swam straight. Swimming past all the other age groups before turning back into the beach wasn’t easy but I found some gaps and squeezed my way through.

Transition 2- Running into transition with a decent gap I got my shoes on and ran! Just as I was leaving transition the others were getting their shoes on. I knew I had to really go for it.
Run- The final run was a new experience for me, I had never lead from a position like this before. I knew I had to breath and focus on the basics, leg cadence, breathing, etc. Turning the last run turn and looking where everyone was I put in another effort to ensure that there were no sprint finishes, before heading to the finish line and enjoying the run shoot for the overall win.

Summary- It was a great first hit out, a lot was learnt, and I look forward to getting back into training in preparation for Runaway Bay. Sitting down with Toby and going through the Pros and Cons of Today’s race and putting plans into play for tomorrows race. Time to rest up, refuel and re-hydrate to get the body ready to race again tomorrow morning.

Race Report – QTS Kawana Race # 3
Transition set up

I racked my bike put my helmet in place with my race belt ready, my towel down and shoes down. Once again, I had my bottles filled one with electrolytes. Cliff Gels were in place on the bike, no second guessing today…. left Transition and was focussing on my race ahead….. I knew what I wanted to do.

Briefing for race
I understood the course and I was ready to go, I was really looking forward to racing this race and seeing what I can do but this time without stress. The course had more corners which meant that I needed to ride smarter and be more efficient

Swim- I was looking forward to this swim. We all lined up to get ready to go, I was surprised that people gave me some space, As the gun went I dove straight in and started going hard to the first buoy, I had already created a body length gap, but I knew that I needed more. As we turned the buoy I tried to kick to increase the gap, but I didn’t go any faster, it was like I was running on empty.

Transition 1- My transition was a bit slower than the previous day, race belt on, helmet on and ran out with my bike.

Bike- Running to the mount line and jumping on my bike whilst trying not fall off, getting up to speed then getting my shoes in. The legs felt a bit heavy after yesterday’s race, I had lost a bit of time in transition and I had to gain it back.

Transition 2- Dismounting the bike and running into transition to try and make up some lost time, racking my bike by the seat, getting my shoes on for the run to try and pull back some time that was lost on the bike.

Run- I was a bit worried about the run, after cramping previously in races I was cautious that it was going to happen again which worried me, the slightest discomfort bit me into a worry, I was in 3rd spot off the bike and should have stayed in that position. Although dropped off and struggled through the run, finishing in 4th place.

Summary- Not the best race, although it was great to have raced and to have finished for the first time in a while with good results.

Again, none of this would be possible without my Coach Toby Coote, the Sponsors of the Sunshine Coast Triathlon Academy / Protector Aluminium Junior scholarship and of course my Family and friends support as always is the reason I can even compete.

QTS Race # 4 Raby Bay Triathlon Race Report

QTS Gatorade series Race #4
Race Details
Day/Date: 10/12/17
Distance:
Sunday – 400m/15km/4km
Transition:
Sunday – 5:15am-6:30am
Race Start:
Sunday – 8:47am
Race Number: 961
Race Result - Sprint Distance - 1st Place 16-19 Years / Overall Race Winner

Race Plan & Goal: The goal for this race was to put the speed that why have been working on into play, keep the skills up to date and to continue working on practising my transition skills.
Preparation for the race: Hydration started two days out, It was going to be very important because I would racing at a very hot/humid time.
Transition set up: The age group rack didn’t have a lot space it was handle bar to handle bar (PACKED) I managed to sneak into a sport not far from the end of the rack. I understood the flow of transition and racked my bike.

15mins before my swim start I had my Clif Gel

Swim: The swim start was stacked on the right-hand side, so I decided to back myself and start on the far left, By the time the siren went off I had already lost 20m from the group… I had finally got just behind the group just before the first buoy and headed to the next one.  Quickly catching the wave ahead trying to avoid as many swimmers as possible before turning the last can. Heading to the ramp it was packed! So many swimmers trying to get out, I found a gap and went for it. Running into transition as fast and as efficient as I could.

Transition 1: Running into transition after a little scuffle, I was at my rack getting my helmet on grabbing my bike and wasting no time.

Bike: Around the roundabout, out of the saddle, shoes in and take off. Today I felt like I had a solid bike compared to usual. It seemed as if I was pulling away from the chasers. Even though I saw a bigger gap opening up I didn’t ease off. I kept pushing into the head wind until I had to take my shoes off to dismount.

Transition 2: Following the course to the dismount line, once I jumped off the bike and my feet hit the road I lifted my bike and was running and ran into transition. Yelling “on your right,” to anyone in my way. I put my shoes on, helmet off, grabbed my race belt and ran.

Run: Running out of transition like I stole something with my brand-new Mizuno Sonic’s, it felt like I was running on air. I was feeling really good on the run, but I knew that I had to hold a good pace because the guys behind me were all good runners. I controlled my breathing and run stride, got to the turn around and had put a lot of time into the others but wasn’t going to back it off. The last one km was a bit of a struggle for a bit. I had gotten a massive stitch in my stomach which took the air from me for about 400m once I hit the final corner I gave it more, so I could finish strong.

Summary: Another great hit out before SSRW, it was great to walk away with a great result which gives me a confidence builder before runaway bay. Now it’s time to rest up and RECOVER.
