Romy Wolstencroft, Triathlete
Hi I’m Romy Wolstencroft and I'm excited and thrilled to be recognised as the SCTA / Protector Aluminium Junior Scholarship recipient for the 2017/2018 season. I’m 18 years old and in my last year of school (thank goodness). I’ve been doing triathlons for around three years and have enjoyed every minute of it. How it started My first year involved me having a bit of fun; trying something new as I transitioned from open water swimming to triathlon. It’s been a bit of a journey. I used to compete competitively in open water swimming where I would swim 5km in either a lake or an ocean. I must admit, I wasn’t built for that sport and it was very challenging but it provided me with a great base of training and mental toughness required for triathlon. My dad does triathlons so when I became bored of just swimming I wanted to give it a go. He always quotes me saying “I’m a swimmer. I don’t run.” And oh how different is that now. Two years later my run has developed into my best leg and my swimming is…well… getting there. Over the past two years I have met so many great people and competed across Australia. Some of the best moments racing I remember included my first triathlon going away with Sunshine Coast Triathlon Academy to Rainbow Beach Triathlon where I competed in the double sprint and was able to come away with a second place (and some money!). Since that race I’ve loved racing. Highlights of the past two years include winning Queensland Senior Girls Triathlon back to back; achieving a handful of seconds and thirds in the opens category in the Queensland Triathlon Series (QTS); Winning the Kawana QTS race, Moreton bay Queensland Sprint Championships and coming second at the Australian All Schools Triathlon Championships with that last one being one of my best races. Despite those races, also being selected as the 2016/17 SCTA athlete of the year was awesome. I’m so thankful for all that Toby Coote has done for me, my training, the sport and the club. Throughout this season I would love to stack up some more first places in the QTS opens category, achieve top three in the Australian Junior Triathlon series and make a big impact in the sport. I would love to thank all the sponsors of SCTA including Catalina Resort, Vorgee, Clif Bars Australia, Xterra Wetsuits Australia, Cannibal Australia, Mizuno Running Australia, Tara Leanne Nutrition, Rydges Hotels and Resorts, The Event Crew, Intune Sports Massage, Ironman Oceania and of course Grant Symes from Protector Aluminium for all the hard work, effort and all the support provided for us young athletes. Can’t wait for the season to begin!
