Another busy weekend of racing for the Sunshine Coast Triathlon academy / Protector Aluminium Athletes and Club Members in action.

Down at Werribee for the Oceania Junior Triathlon Champs, saw some rain Friday evening that cleared to sunshine Saturday morning, only to be told that the water quality was poor and now was turned from a Triathlon to a Duathlon over a 2.5km Run / 20 km Cycle / 5km Run. Race starts were also delayed due to bus service that was running during the times of the races.

Once the racing got started the wind was up and cool conditions greeted the athletes. Plan "B" was put in place and Sophie Burger executed to a tee. settling in the first run and launching on the bike. A 7 lap bike course with 14 U-Turns on tight narrow roads. Sophie came off with a group in 2nd place. A strong run set up a 13th spot. Not bad when your strength gets taken away from you, but she handled herself remarkably well considering all that was thrown at her.

Sophie lined up in the Oceania and Australian Junior Mixed Team Relays the next morning. Teams of 4 (2 x Males 2 x Female) covering a 600m Run / 6km Cycle / 1.2km Run. Sophie raced strongly to be the anchor of the team that saw them receive a Bronze Medal in the Oceania Champs and Silver Medal in the Australian Champs. Tops off a great season for Sophie.

Port Mac was the scene for the 70.3 and Ironman with Andrew Schmidt making his race comeback in Australia. The lead in wasn't ideal with the spicy cough and a new Bub arrival just before Easter. it was a great opportunity to hit a race venue that he loves and to gauge were his training is at with Hawaiian Ironman the key race later in the year. A strong race in a very competitive age category 35-39, saw a 12th place.

In the Ironman, SCTA Club Member and Professional Brodie Gardner hit the race with a good training block. Unfortunately 3 punctures on the bike course wasn't ideal, but he hung tough to finish with a Sub 3hr Marathon and 9th Pro Under 10hrs. Brodie will back up in 6 weeks at Ironman Cairns.

Emily Barrett flew home from South Australia to race the Bagara Triathlon over the standard distance. She had a solid race to take 1st (20-24) and 2nd Female Overall. We will see Emily line up in the 70.3 at Cairns in 6 weeks.

The Maroochydore Cricket Fields was the Venue for Race # 2 of the USCAC Cross Country Series. In the 3km we saw Wade Wallis 1st (13 Years Male), Eva Nicol Rann 1st (13 Years Female) and Marc Wallis 2nd (13 Years Male). In the 4km Millan Power 1st (14 Years Male), 6km Kyle Wallis 1st (17 Years Male) and SCTA Club Member Paul Marchant 1st 10km (18-29 Male)

Testing conditions greeted the swimmers for the Annual Byron Bay Ocean Swim Classic over the 2.2km were Duanne Cannell 1st (50-54) and 4th Overall and Troy Thompson 6th (50-54)
