Round 2 of the Queensland Triathlon Series at Robina saw Sunshine Coast Triathlon Academy / Protector Aluminium Athletes in action over the Olympic, Sprint, Enticer and Kool Kids distances. SCTA had 24 athletes in action on the Sunday's Triathlon and 6 athletes in the Open Water swim on the Saturday.
For the Triathlon we had perfect conditions for fast racing on the flat Robina circuit. With a slight cloud cover, light winds, but we had humid conditions and when the sun poked out it was quite warm. We had some great performances with 9 on the podium dais at presentations.
The first Olympic distance for the season in south east Qld saw Simon Hearn put together a great race behind some seasoned professionals to take out 3rd place Overall behind Sam Betten and Matthew Slee. His swim is coming along nicely and we are see that in his overall position. Having been on the Coast for several months since moving to Qld from Victoria, watch this name in the future.
Melissa Charlton had a great race that saw her after a slow swim move her way thru the field to take out her category win (35-39) while Lucy Bowden continued her strong racing with a solid swim bike combo and struggled a little in the heat of Robina to take out 2nd (25-29). Great to see Mitch Baker back racing well with a 3rd (25-29). Just missing the podium in 4th places where Hannah Blanchett (25-29) and Jessica Lee (35-39)
It wasn't the normal sprint distance with an extra 4km on the bike which suited a few of the athletes. SCTA / Protector Aluminium Junior Scholarship holder Romy Wolstencroft took out the Race win, fastest female and 13th overall. While the win is very pleasing, from a coaching point of view the fact that she implemented a few changes in the way she raced it set up for a very fast 5km run that saw her put 1min - 2min into most of her female rivals. It was great to see Ryan Marsh (14-15) back to back 3rd places from 2 QTS races, beating some of his major rivals. Orla Gallagher had another strong performance with a 5th (35-39) and Ron Craig 9th (40-44).
The Enticer, Jazzy Shults (U/14) had a 3 way sprint finish to just miss the win for the 2nd race in a row, with a 2nd place. With 4 seconds separating the first 3. She was 2nd Female overall on the day. Peyton Craig was 7th (U/14) in a competitive male field and 7th overall, while we saw improvement again from Scott Marsh, Mackenzie Cathcart and Zoe Davis.
In the Kool Kids, Parker Dueztmann (7-9) continued his winning form making it 2 from 2 with a the category win and 8th overall. Bonnie Cathcart (7-9) continued to improve in a very competitive field.
Saturday afternoon saw 6 athletes take on the Open Water Swim at Robina over the 500m, 1000m or 1500m distance. a bit of wind around make it a little choppy in the lake but all the athletes swam well. Jake Hynes took up the charge and won the 1500m. Emma Dann (1000m) and Peyton Craig (500m) both claimed 2nd places.
