A huge weekend for Sunshine Coast Triathlon Academy / Hybrid Concepts Australia athletes with them in action at Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival, Xterra Saipan and African ATU Junior Championships and results from the Caloundra Triathlon the weekend before.
Its been a whirlwind month for Professional Off Road Triathlete Brodie Gardner with his first podium in an Xterra event at Xterra Philipines, gaining selection in the Australia Elite team for World Cross ITU Triathlon Champs and then on the weekend he took out his first ever Xterra Title winning Xterra Saipan.
After some travel dramas which saw him land 4 hours before race start, then getting lost on the run, Brodie held his nerves together to take out the over a 1.5km swim / 30km Mt Bike and a 12km run to win by 1 min 30 sec. Awesome job Brodie under very trying conditions. Brodie currently lies 2nd on the Xterra Asia - Pacific Tour Elite Men Series.
Friday night saw the Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival open with the Twilight 5km Run along the Esplande. It started off with a 4 lap 5km Elite Male and Female Race with Romy Wolstencroft lining up against a quality field where she ended up 5th place in a time of 17:19.
Next was the 2 lap 5km run which saw Josh Corcoran take 2nd (20-29) with Jazzy Shults just missing the podium with 4th (U/16) while Meg Roberts 5th (U/16) and Macey Roberts 7th (U/16).
Super Saturday was a massive day starting with our Super Kids Triathlon with Jake and Zak Hammond, Finn and Pipi Barlow, Liam Wallace, Millie Meredith and Hugo Cattle. As there were no results for the a Super Kids all the SCTA juniors raced extremely well in overcast and a passing shower.
Next up was the Ocean Swim over a M-shaped 1km swim. This year with some surf it was always going to be interesting. Stuart Louth led the way with the Open Male swim title in a sprint finish. Later he thought he was sprinting for 3rd place so to take the $450 win he was pretty happy. Kaya Shults took the title (13-15) and 4th female overall, while younger sister Jazzy Shults 2nd (U/13) with Chris George 3rd (30-39).
To round out Super Saturday the ITU Male and Female World Cup in which we saw PNG and SCTA athlete Rachel James take the line in her first World Cup and for her country ever!! Rachel was stepping up against some of the worlds best females. She held on till her 3rd lap on the bike riding solo but learnt and gained valuable experience that will be used in future races. SCTA had some ITU athletes join in on some of the training session in the lead up to the World Cups. Amanda Bohlin (36th), Adrian Briffod (36th) and Bob Haller (45th)
