Race Updates
A massive weekend of action for Sunshine Coast Tri Academy / Protector Aluminium athletes at the World 70.3 Champs at Mooloolaba and ITU Pacific Islands Triathlon Champs in Solomon Islands. also results from the recent Larapinta 4 day trail run as well.
Mooloolaba put the weather on for the World 70.3 Championships with ideal conditions for competition. Matt Wolstencroft led the charge with at one stage during the run sitting in 2nd place but faded a little to just miss the podium in 4th place and 1st Aussie. there was a gap of 1min between the first 4 places in his age category.
Malin Olsson had a strong swim and bike to be in the hunt but 5km into the run she suffered with cramping and was unable to execute the run how she was in training. Wasn't the ideal lead up with a severe migraine and studies in her PHD at Uni but she put it all on the line on the day and did what she could for 42nd place.
The French contingent that had been swimming with SCTA in the lead up to the event saw Maeva Geyer-Carles take out 11th (18-24 Years) and unfortunately Cederic Dutheil was forced to withdraw during the run leg after a very strong cycle leg. Safe travels home Maeva and Cederic.
In the World 70.3 festival events we saw Stuart Louth (8th) in the 1000m Ocean swim and Jazzy Shults took the female line honours in the 5km Boardie Run and well done to all the SCTA Juniors that were in the Iron Kids as well.
Rachel James headed to Honiara in the Solomon Islands for the ITU Pacific Islands Triathlon Champs. Its another part of the journey for her trying to gain selection for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Rachel set up her race win with a strong swim that saw her exit the water in front beating the men out of the water, was passed by 1 male on the bike and then 2 on the run to be 4th overall amongst the men and being the first PNG to cross the line ahead of her countrymen.
SCTA sister club of New Ireland Triathlon Academy (NITA) took over 6 athletes (including Rachel) and came away with 6 medals. Very impressive result from Team NITA
The famous Larapinta Trail run was held over 4 days on the 11th-14th August where we saw Kate Gazzard and Peter Schultz take on the challenge. Day 1 consisted of a 19km run, Day 2 - 39km, Day 3 - 30.3km and they finished off with a short 45km run for day 4. Kate had a great 4 days with 3rd (20-39) and 4th female overall while Peter was 2nd (50-59). Great effort.
