Sunshine Coast Triathlon Academy / Protector Aluminium Athletes were in action over the weekend in Devonport for the ITU Oceania Sprint Cup also incorporating Round # 3 of the Australian Junior + Youth Series which doubled as the Australian ITU Sprint Champs for Juniors and Youths, While Brodie Gardner competed at Lake Crackenback which also doubled as the Australian + Oceania ITU Cross Triathlon Championships.
At Devonport, the ITU Juniors were first off the line with the Men and the SCTA / PA Junior Scholarship Holder Ryan Marsh was in action amongst a very strong field that contained 43 athletes including NZ Juniors. Ryan had a strong swim and got a group working together on the tough hilly course, where he came off in a good position. A solid run saw him beat a few that beat him at Qld Schools Triathlon Champs to finish 25th.
The female Juniors were off next and we had Jazi Coventry and Erin Wooldridge in action. Jazi had a great swim up near the front, while Erin's swim is showing the improvement each time getting closer out of the water. both girls rode strong in different packs and both ran solid times after a tough cycle course that saw Jazi finish 16th and Erin in 18th.
SCTA Club member Brittany Dutton lined up in the Elite Female as an U/23 athlete. she had a good swim and bike and a solid run to finish 8th U/23.
Next day saw Jazi, Ryan and Erin race in the Australian Mixed Team Relays. Jazi was in Team Bevan where they finished 7th Place while Erin and Ryan were in Team Gentle where they were 10th. It was great weekend of racing that saw lots of positives out of it. Both Ryan and Erin have moved into the Juniors from Youths last year and that transition period is always a tough one. So lots to work on but also lots to take out of the race moving forward.
Next up was Mia "Ratbag" Wooldridge I the Youth Females which also doubled as the Australian Championships. Mia had a great swim just off the top girls but a tough transition where she struggled to get her wetsuit off saw her lose valuable time. She had a good bike where there were a few girls to work with and she ran the 2nd fastest time to land on the podium in 3rd place.
At Lake Crackenback the racing was fast and furious. Brodie Gardner was a down on time out of the water but a strong bike and run held him in good steed to just miss the podium with a 4th place at the Oceania + Australian Champs.
