Race Updates
2 big weekends of Racing for the Sunshine Coast Triathlon Academy / Protector Aluminium Athletes that were in action at the World Triathlon Champs in Lausanne, Hawaii North Shore 5km Open Water Swim, Sunshine Coast 70.3 , Run Forest Run Hondsrug and the World 70.3 Champs in France.
Sunshine Coast 70.3 and a home ground advantage saw some amazing results over the weekend. Its been a long winter for a lot of the athletes and with World 70.3 slots on the line, there was a lot at stake. we had 4 SCTA Athletes / Members secure World Champs slots for 2020 Taupo World Champs and SCTA secured 3rd place in the TriClub Podium where they took the best 5 results against every Club/Group competing.
Lucy Bowden executed her race to a tee which saw her take the 25-29 Years Female Win and 9th Female overall. Michael Hooper secured his World Spot with a 5th Place 25-29 Years Male. Matt Billington 19th (25-29) is forever improving and we saw the hard work repaid. The ever consistent Zsolt Dallos was 10th (35-39) and forgone his spot at World 70.3 and Ron Craig 91st (40-44).
Team 260 consisted of Stuart Louth (Swim), Kev "Big Dog" Hammond (Cycle) and Mick Woodcock (Run) teamed up on Friday and entered and took out 3rd Male Teams.
SCTA Club Members were in action and it was Great to see Simon Hearn stepping up in the Pro Males for the first time at Sun Coast. A great swim had him with the lead pack off the bike and a strong run set a podium position in 3rd place. Matt Wolstencroft took out the 50-54 Title and secured his spot at the 70.3 World Champs. As did Meg Hawkins with a 2nd (25-29 Female). Kierra Sansome batted a tough day in the Pro Female to finish 8th. Great racing from Mel McNiff 32nd (30-34 Female) and Luke Polkinghorne 95th (25-29).
At the World Triathlon Champs in Lausanne we had SCTA / Protector Aluminium Junior scholarship holder Ryan Marsh, line up in the 16-19 Years Sprint Draft legal race. As the youngest competitor in the Australian Team and possibly the World at this race, he lined up against Males up to 4 years older than him. He had a great swim and transition to position himself in the 2nd pack on the bike. A hilly and technical course suited him and had a very strong run to finish in 9th place and 3rd Aussie across the line. He was less than 50 secs off 3rd place and 1min 40 secs off the winner. In a post race phone conversation I ask how it was and he said he was on the line with guys with beards and tattoos. Well done Rhino
Janelle McCosker headed over to Hawaii to compete in the North Shore 5km Open water swim and the Waikiki Rough Water Swim. First swim was the Rough water Swim at Waikiki and it lived up to its reputation with strong currents that saw even the Pro Swimmers at least 40 min slower than the year before. Janelle battle the currents where at times the swimmers were actually going backwards. Unfortunately Janelle was unable to finish and wasn't alone recording a DNF.
She turned that disappointment into a winning result at the North shore 5km Open Water 6 days later having a great swim and learning the currents and tides, where Janelle took out the 55-59 Years Title, 12th Female and 23rd Overall. A great way to finish off and awesome result.
Over in the Netherlands, they run a series Called the Run Forest Run and this time was held at Hondsrug. Its a race but more emphasis is getting out and running on trails. Marion Tuin had a great run to take out the first Female across the line
Over in France for the World 70.3 Champs, Carrie Lester lined up the Pro Female against a quality field and a very tough course. She had a great race to finish 27th. She will now set herself up for a tilt at Hawaiian Ironman World Champs in Kona
