Qld All Schools and Qld Athletics - Race report
Queensland Athletics Champs – 800m Thursday 25th Heat – Qualified for Final Saturday 27th Final – 5th Place 13 Years Boys – 2.11 Queensland Schools Triathlon Sunday 28th Distance - 300 / 10 / 2.5 Result – 3rd Place Junior Boys / 1st Sunshine Coast Region / Qualified for Queensland Schools Triathlon Champs It was that time of year again, first major race of the season, Queensland All Schools. The lead up to the race was great, was fit fast and ready to fire after a really solid block of training in preparation. It was always going to be a challenging, and I knew that, with a strong field of competitors and hot weather it was tough. I had left in the 2nd wave 2 minutes after the first wave that had majority of the stronger athletes, so I knew I was going to be chasing. The vorgee MK11 were the goggles of choice and were absolutely amazing to race with, which had proved to help leading my wave out of the water and was chasing down the leaders. Onto the bike and was happy with my position, I was extremely happy with my bike and believed that I had rode well, battling a head wind on the way out and what you could say as quite a technical course had taken a bit out of the legs but was still feeling great. A few issues technique wise, were discovered by coach, that I knew have got to be worked on, however overall it was a great ride. I had dropped 50 seconds to the leader heading into T2 and new time had to be made up on the run. Advice by Coach Toby Coote was given pre-race about not killing myself in the first km, which was ignored as I had taken it out too hard which resulted in stitching up, thankfully it was bearable and I still ended up with an average run having the quickest split, unfortunately I hadn’t made up the time that was needed but was still happy with a 3rd place. In the lead up to the Qld All Schools Triathlon, I competed in the Qld Schools Athletics Championships in Brisbane. I was competing in the 800m and 1500m. Unfortunately, the timing of the 15500m final coincided with the Triathlon. It was a hard decision to pull out of the 1500 as I am the reigning National Champion at this distance, but I want to pursue Triathlon so that took precedent. The heats of the 800m were on the Thursday and Final on the Saturday. It was fast and furious in the Heats but I qualified with a time of 2.13. Now for the Final and it was going to be fast. Dylan took the running at the start and powered on to win in 2.03. I tried to go with him but he was running quickly. I tried to hold off the runners coming from behind. 2 seconds separated 2nd to 6th. I was happy with 5th place in 2.11 My focus turned to recovery and preparation for Sundays Triathlon. My next race will be Round 3 of the Queensland Triathlon Series on 18th November with the Queensland Aquathlon Champs the day before both on home soil at Lake Kawana. A huge thanks to all the sponsors who had supported me in the lead up to the race and a big wrap for Toby for his guidance and patience for getting me where I am. it.
